What size of Charge Controller do I need?

The charge controller regulates the voltage and current coming from the solar panels and going into the batteries.

The first step in figuring out your charge controller size is figuring out your battery bank size, and the number of solar panels you will need.  

We suggest reading these articles first;

Now that you know what size of battery bank you need, as well as the size of solar array you need to charge the battery bank in a day, it’s time to figure out what size solar charge controller you need.

The calculation for charge controller size is very simple.

  • You will divide the size of our solar array by the voltage of our battery bankThis will give you the amps that are needed for the charge controller.   

For example, if you are using a 12 volt battery bank, and have a 600 watt solar array, you would need at least a 50 amp charge controller.  

  • 600 watts of solar /12 volt battery bank = 50Amp charge controller

It’s always smart to have a slightly bigger charge controller in order to avoid overheating and charging issues, so for this example, we would suggest going with a 60A charge controller such as this one here
